The exotic taste of Thailand in the heart of Oxford.
The Cuisine
Established in 1992, Bangkok House serves authentic Thai cuisine by combining the culinary skills of Thai chefs and quality, locally-sourced ingredients.
Thai cuisine ranges from mildly-flavoured dishes to hot and fiery ones. Due to Thailand's long and beautiful coastline, seafood dishes play a prominent role in the cuisine. The traditional way to eat Thai food is with a fork and spoon from a flat plate filled with rice. Thais prefer not to mix their food in order to retain the unique flavours of each dish.
In order to taste the best variety of Thai cuisine, one may wish to share a selection of the many starters, salads, and vegetable and meat dishes with others. Over the years, Bangkok House has welcomed people all across the world to enjoy the exotic taste of Thai cuisine.
The Venue
The origins of Bangkok House date back to 1868 when it was built to replace the former floating chapel at Fisher Row which worked to serve the local community of boatmen and their families on the Oxford Canal. It was additionally both a day school for infants and a night school for men at one point in time.
It is possible this community of people may date back to the medieval ages based on the presence of the hythes surrounding Osney Island. These however, slowly diminished as the use of canals for freight came to an end and more significantly, as Fisher Row was demolished in the mid-20th century.
Today, we celebrate the building as representative of how integral transport was to the history and character of the West End.
